Fun in Ubud

Another weekend with hours of homework loomed.  This time we hit a bucket list item of Ramses: Breakfast with the Orangutans and Mud Fun with the Elephants at the Bali Zoo.  Rams saw the ad our first day in Bali and has not stopped talking about it.  Unfortunately, the zoo is over an hour from our villa and breakfast starts at 8:30.  Tough logistics for a teen.  So, Friday night we stayed at the Sthala hotel, just minutes from the zoo. The breakfast royalty were the Orangutans, but there were also elephants, rabbits, porcupine, birds, and a gibbon.  After breakfast we changed into swimsuits and got wet and muddy playing with the elephants (we hope that was all just mud).  Ramses particularly liked the baby elephant! 

Back at the hotel we made a dent in the homework and had a lovely dinner at the rooftop restaurant while the rain poured.

A long trip on my own

Even before we applied to Green School, we planned for this day, giving Mallorie veto power over the Bali Adventure because we knew if we went to Bali, Mal's graduation would not be a whole family event. Mallorie graduates from U Rochester this weekend, and tonight I fly to NY.  Rams has school and John hates the flying part of travel, so it is just me.  Denpasar to Doha to Chicago to Rochester.  27 hours total flight time.  Hopefully only 38 hours door to door, with a 12 hour time change. I boarded the first leg at 1 AM.  I intended to have dinner and then a nap.  Somehow while enjoying a glass of champagne and the massage seat back, I closed my eyes and missed both dinner and turndown service.  The QSuite chair was hard as a camping mat, but the blanket was soft and warm.  Congee for breakfast a few hours later, with an episode of The Winchesters, started the 'day?' off right.

Hot day in Hoi An

Vietnam is in the Northern hemisphere which means as we head South, towards the equator, Hanoi was warm, Hue hot, and Hoi An very hot.  We left early to see My Son Sanctuary before the real heat of the day.  These temples were built earlier than Angkor Wat by the Champa people.  Like Angkor, it was lost the the jungle, until it was rediscovered by the French who removes the heads from the statues, removed anything of value (including the king's body) and shipped the lot to The Louvre.  Later, American B52s bombed the site.  Despite all this it is a beautiful site.  After lunch and a rest, we went to the Bamboo Circus.  These artists were amazingly skillful and the bamboo apparatus' were inventive and unique.  A good day.
