Rotorua - Day 1

We are staying at the Aura Accomodations in Rotorua, in a lovely little apartment with a hot mineral bath on site.  We went to the local grocery store, Countdown, for Ramses' spinach, breakfast foods and yet more chocolate. Settling in, we watched a South Korean film: Along with the gods: the 2 worlds.  We would recommend!  This AM we visited the Wai-o-tapu thermal wonderland which was like visiting another planet.  In the afternoon, we lugged down Skyline Rotorua in the pouring rain. Fortunately it is not too cold here, but by dinner we were completely soaked.  After dinner, quick dip in the mineral bath warmed us right up.

A long trip on my own

Even before we applied to Green School, we planned for this day, giving Mallorie veto power over the Bali Adventure because we knew if we went to Bali, Mal's graduation would not be a whole family event. Mallorie graduates from U Rochester this weekend, and tonight I fly to NY.  Rams has school and John hates the flying part of travel, so it is just me.  Denpasar to Doha to Chicago to Rochester.  27 hours total flight time.  Hopefully only 38 hours door to door, with a 12 hour time change. I boarded the first leg at 1 AM.  I intended to have dinner and then a nap.  Somehow while enjoying a glass of champagne and the massage seat back, I closed my eyes and missed both dinner and turndown service.  The QSuite chair was hard as a camping mat, but the blanket was soft and warm.  Congee for breakfast a few hours later, with an episode of The Winchesters, started the 'day?' off right.

Hot day in Hoi An

Vietnam is in the Northern hemisphere which means as we head South, towards the equator, Hanoi was warm, Hue hot, and Hoi An very hot.  We left early to see My Son Sanctuary before the real heat of the day.  These temples were built earlier than Angkor Wat by the Champa people.  Like Angkor, it was lost the the jungle, until it was rediscovered by the French who removes the heads from the statues, removed anything of value (including the king's body) and shipped the lot to The Louvre.  Later, American B52s bombed the site.  Despite all this it is a beautiful site.  After lunch and a rest, we went to the Bamboo Circus.  These artists were amazingly skillful and the bamboo apparatus' were inventive and unique.  A good day.
