A Magical day in Rotorua

We started our day at the Buried Town of Te Wairoa, and it really exceeded our expectations!  A volcano erupted here in 1886, burying several villages.  Folks would naturly come out to poke around... And in the 1930s, a family invested the time and money to make the site into a proper archeological/tourist site.  It also happens to sit in the midst of a most beautiful rain forest complete with babbling brook and rushing waterfall.  We give it a full 5 thumbs up.  Next up, was a wooden 3D maze:  good fun and a good warmup for our evening activity..... kayaking to see glow worms.  I think this was the perfect way to see the glow worms and I'm sure I will be able to move my arms again in a couple of days...and this was the 5 and up version!

Hot day in Hoi An

Vietnam is in the Northern hemisphere which means as we head South, towards the equator, Hanoi was warm, Hue hot, and Hoi An very hot.  We left early to see My Son Sanctuary before the real heat of the day.  These temples were built earlier than Angkor Wat by the Champa people.  Like Angkor, it was lost the the jungle, until it was rediscovered by the French who removes the heads from the statues, removed anything of value (including the king's body) and shipped the lot to The Louvre.  Later, American B52s bombed the site.  Despite all this it is a beautiful site.  After lunch and a rest, we went to the Bamboo Circus.  These artists were amazingly skillful and the bamboo apparatus' were inventive and unique.  A good day.

A long trip on my own

Even before we applied to Green School, we planned for this day, giving Mallorie veto power over the Bali Adventure because we knew if we went to Bali, Mal's graduation would not be a whole family event. Mallorie graduates from U Rochester this weekend, and tonight I fly to NY.  Rams has school and John hates the flying part of travel, so it is just me.  Denpasar to Doha to Chicago to Rochester.  27 hours total flight time.  Hopefully only 38 hours door to door, with a 12 hour time change. I boarded the first leg at 1 AM.  I intended to have dinner and then a nap.  Somehow while enjoying a glass of champagne and the massage seat back, I closed my eyes and missed both dinner and turndown service.  The QSuite chair was hard as a camping mat, but the blanket was soft and warm.  Congee for breakfast a few hours later, with an episode of The Winchesters, started the 'day?' off right.
